To The Grand Canyon - The Point of the Whole Trip

There are a lot of things to see in this country. On the drive from Tucson to the Grand Canon, we again avoided freeways, adding about two hours to the trip, but many more interesting views. Also, much less traffic.

We first drove through Globe, the location of a huge Freeport McMoran copper/gold mine. The area (In Maricopa County) is called "Cobre Valley" and the mine is still in operation. Lots of "help wanted" signs out.

The route took us past the Teddy Roosevelt Reservoir as well. Big lake! We saw a Bald Eagle there.

Further on we drove through the Tonto National Forest where we saw some cliff dwellings. People have been here for a long time.

There are cliff dwellings there.

And big views.

But after about seven hours we were rewarded with this:

Photos really cannot do the Grand Canyon justice, especially a phone camera, as good as it might be.

And of course, we had to be part of it.

We watched the sunset draw long shadows over the canyon, changing colors as it went.

We are staying at the El Tovar lodge, so we were able to order rooms service for supper. Everything is fully booked here because of COVID restrictions.

What a beautiful place.

Tomorrow, we hike the Bright Angel Trail. Easy! (right?)
